The beach has always offered me an escape from the real world. Life gets complicated, but the beach is not. It’s kind of like a saltwater desert, with dunes, ocean, and sky. It does have a bracing intensity – bright sun, strong wind, powerful waves – that wash away the unimportant human cares. I go to the beach to paint, and I walk away renewed, with a new painting of the sand and surf and sky.
My plein air friends paint the waves and the sky. I seek interesting subjects hiding in the dunes. “Beach Cruiser” is a quick outdoor oil painting sketch of a bicycle I found parked at the edge of the dunes.
